Show Notes

It's an April Fools' show, yet we only discuss things that have actually happened. It says a lot for the character of the markets that many of the current topics could probably double up as pranks.

Other than Cathie Wood's ARK investing in John Deere in a space fund (?!?), the really interesting story in the markets has been the Archegos Capital Management blowup. A few banks have found themselves severely on the wrong end of this hedge fund disaster. Some retail investors would've been hurt as well.

In Episode 19 of Magic Markets, hosts The Finance Ghost and Mohammed Nalla (Moe-Knows) discuss how hedge funds work and how this has happened. There's also a discussion around investing in IPOs, with a dad joke thrown in along the way for good measure.

The talented finance professionals at Westbrooke Alternative Asset Management have been doing a wonderful job of educating the Magic Markets audience about asset classes like private debt and venture capital. In the latest show, we welcome Dino Zuccollo and Richard Asherson back to Magic Markets to discuss the concept of “hybrid capital” – a debt-led private equity approach that uses different instruments to achieve a level of return between debt and equity. The key here is the combination of downside protection, a strong yield and equity upside in these investments. Westbrooke currently executes this strategy in the UK market. For more information on Westbrooke’s alternative asset strategies, be sure to visit the Westbrooke website. Magic Markets #46: M&A - Cash vs. Share Deals

In Episode 46 of Magic Markets, The Finance Ghost and Mohammed Nalla take a break from trading-related concepts to talk about another critical part of the financial markets ecosystem: mergers and acquisitions. The recent Zoom - Five9 transaction is a great case study, mainly because it fell over in the end. Zoom tried to do an all-share deal and Five9 shareholders weren't interested in receiving Zoom shares in return for selling Five9. The hosts explore the theories behind cash vs. share deals and touch on numerous practical concepts that they have seen play out in the markets. The benefit of having more than 25 years of combined financial markets experience is clear in this episode. Magic Markets is your invitation to sit in on our conversations about the markets. ...
